Under the general direction of the Environmental Program Manager II, the Environmental Program Manager I (Supervisory) plans, organizes, directs, and oversees complex and sensitive scientific program work in the Department of Pesticide Regulation’s (DPR) Integrated Pest Management Branch to support DPR’s mission to protect human health and the environment by fostering sustainable pest management (SPM) practices. Programs managed include an SPM initiatives program, a statewide pesticide use reporting program, and an urban pesticide use program, which variously focus on promoting sustainable pest management (SPM) by advancing integrated pest management (IPM) knowledge and practices through a range of projects, methods, and approaches. This work includes education and outreach activities, enabling and applying an understanding of statewide pesticide use trends, and promotion and advancement of SPM/IPM in program implementation. Supervises and directs a highly trained and interdisciplinary staff of scientists and technical specialists in pest management disciplines (entomology, weed science, nematology, and plant pathology), agronomy, horticulture, plant science, statistics, and data collection/evaluation involved in pest management programs and projects applicable to agricultural, urban, and/or wildlands/natural lands settings.
 
The position includes supervisory, technical, consultative, analytical, policy, and liaison duties and requires the incumbent to apply a high degree of interpersonal communication skill, political acumen, organizational and strategic vision, and confidentiality in accomplishing the work. The Environmental Program Manager I (Supervisory) will participate in carrying out DPR’s strategic and operational goals and will consider, apply, and demonstrate DPR’s organizational values of Accountability, Integrity, Collaboration, and Continuous Improvement when carrying out the department’s mission and vision.
